Organisational Structure

Tea Research Institute has technical and administrative wings. The overall head is the Director of Research/ Chief Executive Officer while there is a Deputy Director. The Strategic Plan defines a new management structure for Tea Research Institute under the programmes approach where functions are clustered for efficiency, effectiveness and economy while observing values, accountability and ethics. The new organization structure is presented in Figures below.

Board of Directors

The Board of Directors shall be constituted by the Minister for Agriculture, and shall serve for a period of three years, as prescribed by the Memorandum and Articles of Association as registered under the Companies Act (Cap 486) Laws of Kenya. Its composition reflects all the stakeholders and the Government as provided for in the State Corporations Act. The Board is the policy making organ of the Foundation.

Director Tea Research Institute

The Director will be the Chief Executive Officer of the Foundation and will answer to the Board. He will be the Secretary to the Board, and will focus both within and outside the Foundation, to seek, establish and foster favourable and productive interactions with key stakeholders in the external environment. The Director puts efforts in resource mobilization both internally and externally so as to be able to optimize on strategic research on tea as per the Tea Research Institute mandate.

Deputy Director

Tea Research Institute has substantively filled the position of Deputy Director from February 2010. The Deputy Director is answerable to the Director and assists him in management and co-ordination of the day-to-day operations of the Foundation and running the institution in the absence of the Director.

Programme Heads

The current programmes approach that has been approved by the Board of Directors is yet to have substantive holders of Programme Heads appointed. Currently, the heads of technical departments are manning the divisions that would merge into programmes as laid out in the organization chart. The current existing technical departments are:

  • Botany.
  • Chemistry.
  • Crop Environment.
  • Plant Protection.
  • Technology Transfer and Socio-Economics.
Heads of Support Departments

The Directorate Division comprises of Finance and Administration Department and the Internal Audit unit both of which report to the Director. The Finance and Administration includes:

  • Accounts.
  • Human Resource.
  • Supplies and Procurement.
  • Stores.
  • Tea Farm.
  • Medical.
  • ICT.
